Attorney General Ashley Moody highlighted the dedication and commitment of individuals who have gone above and beyond to assist crime victims during the National Crime Victims’ Rights Week Ceremony. Moody expressed her appreciation for the award recipients, stating, “This year’s Distinguished Victim Services Award recipients have gone above and beyond the call of duty to help crime victims through their darkest days. I’m honored to highlight their incredible stories and the vital selfless work they do to help victims.”
Among the recipients of the Attorney General’s Distinguished Victim Services Award were law enforcement officers and victim advocates who have displayed exceptional dedication in their roles. Detective James Kaban from the Coral Springs Police Department, Investigator T.C. McIntosh from the Office of the State Attorney, 7th Judicial Circuit, and Detective Stephanie Casas from the Boca Raton Police Department were recognized for their outstanding contributions.
On the victim advocacy side, Candace Harrinarine from the Florida Atlantic University Police Department, Raiza C. Garcia from the City of Coral Gables Police Department, and Jennifer Moffitt from the Office of the State Attorney, 6th Judicial Circuit, were honored for their exemplary efforts in supporting and assisting crime victims.
National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, established in 1981, serves as a time for reflection on the commitment to serving victims of all crimes. The Florida Constitution and Florida Crime Victims' Bill of Rights ensure that crime victims are granted certain rights, including the right to be informed, present, and heard during crucial stages of criminal proceedings. Additionally, victims have the right to be free from harassment, intimidation, or abuse, and to have their safety and that of their families considered when setting bail or pretrial release conditions.
The Attorney General’s Division of Victim Services and Criminal Justice Programs plays a crucial role in advocating for crime victims and providing support services.
