BOSTON (Legal Newsline) - A Massachusetts couple allege the prescription drug Cipro has given the wife lifelong injuries.

A lawsuit was filed April 16 in Suffolk Superior Court against several pharmaceutical companies and healthcare providers, alleging that they knowingly produced and distributed a dangerous drug, resulting in severe injuries to countless victims.

The plaintiff, Talia Smith, accuses Bayer, Hikma Pharmaceuticals USA Inc., West-Ward Pharmaceuticals Corporation, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham Inc., Affiliated Physicians Inc., Harvard University, Heather Boxerman M.D., and Alison Boyer N.P. of exploiting individuals for corporate gain.

The complaint revolves around the drug ciprofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. The defendants are accused of concealing its dangerous effects without providing adequate warnings.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has linked this drug to crippling side effects that can cause permanent damage to tendons, muscles, joints, nerves, and the central nervous system.

As for the Smiths, Talia was suspicious about a urinary tract infection in April 2021, and testing revealed E. Coli. Boyer informed her that she should take Cipro to fight it.

Smith ultimately developed pain in her legs, plus gastrointestinal problems. She said she developed Achilles tendinitis, paresthesias and mast cell activation disorder, among other problems like migraines, nightmares, depression and nausea.

Christopher Lynett of Keches Law Group in Bridgewater and Thomas Bosworth of Philadelphia represent the Smiths.
