The Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) marked Earth Day by releasing their accomplishments report for Fiscal Year 2023. Assistant Attorney General Todd Kim of ENRD emphasized the division's dedication to environmental justice and combating the climate crisis, stating, “We do this while carrying out a mission of remarkable breadth in enforcing federal laws enacted to protect public health, worker safety, natural resources, and animal welfare."
The report showcases ENRD's efforts in defending pollution control measures, renewable energy projects, and federal stewardship of public lands, wildlife, and natural resources. Additionally, the division's Office of Environmental Justice provided training, outreach resources, and support to the Justice Department, engaging with stakeholders and organizing outreach activities.
ENRD's collaboration with U.S. Attorneys’ Offices resulted in the prosecution of criminal violations of environmental and animal welfare laws. Notable achievements in the report include a $1.6 billion Clean Air Act settlement with Cummins Inc., a significant Clean Air Act settlement with BP Whiting, and the sentencing of a Florida couple for illegal plywood importation. ENRD's efforts to combat dogfighting led to multiple convictions and the rescue of numerous dogs.
In Fiscal Year 2023, ENRD attorneys worked on approximately 4,500 matters, securing over $440 million in fines, penalties, and costs. The division also obtained federal injunctive relief valued at $2.3 billion, saving the United States over $2.5 billion through litigation.
