BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Legal Newsline) - A class action lawyer is claiming the "real beef" used in Pup-Peroni dog treats is something else.

A class action lawsuit was filed April 7 in New York federal court against Big Heart Pet Brands Inc. by Margot Zimmerman. The suit alleges that the company's marketing for its Pup-Peroni brand dog snacks is misleading.

The complaint focuses on the company's claim that "Real Beef" is the number one ingredient in its product. Zimmerman argues that this is false and misleading as consumers understand "beef" to refer to a type of meat fit for human consumption.

However, in pet food context, "beef" has a different meaning, the suit says.

Zimmerman alleges that the use of the term "Real Beef" on Pup-Peroni packaging misleads consumers into believing they are purchasing a higher quality product than what is actually being sold. The plaintiff seeks damages for alleged violations of consumer protection laws.

Controversial lawyer Spencer Sheehan filed the case. He has filed hundreds of consumer deception class actions, with one judge calling a "wrecking ball."
