The Justice Department has revealed its plan to distribute grant funding for the fiscal year 2024, with the aim of bolstering community safety and improving justice system outcomes. Over 200 grant programs will be made available to community-based organizations, government agencies, research institutions, and nonprofit entities. These grants will be administered by the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), and Office on Violence Against Women (OVW). The awards, which are subject to appropriations, will build upon the $5.8 billion in grants awarded in Fiscal Year (FY) 2023.

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland emphasized the importance of ensuring safety and protection for all individuals, stating, "Every person, in every neighborhood, deserves to be safe and feel protected." He encouraged police departments, community organizations, and other partners to apply for funding through the Justice Department's extensive grant programs.

Deputy Attorney General Lisa O. Monaco highlighted the significant impact these resources will have on the lives of Americans across the nation. From funding more officers on the beat to assisting survivors of domestic violence, these grants will benefit a wide range of organizations and contribute to safer communities.

The grants awarded by the Justice Department's three grantmaking components cover various public safety activities. These include law enforcement hiring, community violence intervention, justice system-behavioral health partnerships, school safety measures, and programs addressing domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. The funding opportunities will be available through competitive and formula grants.

Acting Associate Attorney General Benjamin C. Mizer expressed gratitude towards the dedicated employees who administer the grants and support applicants and grantees throughout the process. He emphasized the Department's commitment to advancing community safety, justice, and wellness.

The Justice Department's Program Plan, published annually, outlines the funding opportunities intended to enhance community safety and trust, improve the justice system, and assist victims of crime. It also provides training and technical assistance to government agencies and community-based organizations, as well as conducts research and collects national statistics. The Program Plan includes details of the funding opportunities each grantmaking component has released or plans to release in the fiscal year. Interested parties can search for specific opportunities using various criteria such as component or office, keyword, eligible applicant category, and expected release date.

It is important to note that funding amounts and other relevant information in the FY 2024 Plan are subject to the availability of appropriations and potential legislative changes. Therefore, potential applicants are advised to stay updated through email subscription services provided by the COPS Office, OJP, and OVW.
