The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is currently conducting an investigation into an officer involved critical incident (OICI) in Appleton, Wis. that occurred on the morning of Tuesday, January 23, 2024.
According to reports, the Appleton Police Department received a call at approximately 1:33 a.m. regarding shots fired inside the Maritime Bar located at 336 W. Wisconsin Avenue in Appleton. Law enforcement promptly responded to the scene and were met with an armed individual who opened fire on them. In response, an officer from the Appleton Police Department discharged their firearm, ultimately fatally striking the subject. Life-saving measures were initiated, but unfortunately, the individual was pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital. A firearm was also recovered at the scene.
Fortunately, no members of law enforcement were injured during the incident. As per department policy, the involved officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Importantly, it has been confirmed that the officer was wearing a body camera during the incident, which will aid in the investigation.
The Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), with the assistance of the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory, the Outagamie County Coroner's Office, DCI Crime Response Specialists, and members of DCI's Digital Evidence Unit, is leading the investigation. All parties involved in law enforcement are fully cooperating with DCI throughout the process.
DCI is rigorously reviewing the evidence and meticulously determining the facts surrounding this incident. Upon the conclusion of the investigation, investigative reports will be handed over to the Outagamie County District Attorney. Inquiries from the media should be directed to the Wisconsin DOJ.
