In recognition of Human Trafficking Prevention Month, Attorney General Jason Miyares of Virginia is emphasizing the resources available to combat human trafficking and support survivors. The Office of the Attorney General has partnered with various organizations and agencies to provide training and broaden legislation aimed at tackling human trafficking.

One of the notable partnerships is with the Commonwealth's Attorney's Services Council, the Department of Criminal Justice Services, and the Virginia State Police. Together, they have conducted first-of-its-kind training for prosecutors, law enforcement, and jurisdictions across Virginia on investigating and prosecuting human trafficking under state law. Attorney General Miyares has also supported legislation to expand anti-human trafficking training for law enforcement, hotel employees, and first-year college students.

The Office of the Attorney General actively participates in multiple federal, state, and local human trafficking workgroups and task forces. For instance, the Hampton Roads Human Trafficking Task Force, comprising federal, state, and local law enforcement, successfully investigated a labor trafficking operation that exposed over 100 smuggled individuals from El Salvador, including children, resulting in four indictments.

Colonel Gary T. Settle, Superintendent of the Virginia State Police, emphasized the importance of collaboration in combating human trafficking, saying, "Working together with the Attorney General, our local law enforcement partners, and community members to end this criminal activity is of utmost importance, and we urge others to join us in the fight against human trafficking."

Another significant development is the establishment of the Virginia Capital Area Human Trafficking Task Force. This task force, comprised of the Virginia State Police, Chesterfield County Police, Henrico County Division of Police, and Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, focuses on identifying potential trafficking victims and connecting them with support services and resources. The task force investigates cases of exploitation and trafficking, regardless of age or gender.

Attorney General Miyares has also launched the 100% Business Alliance Against Trafficking initiative, which provides workforce training for businesses to educate their employees on recognizing potential trafficking incidents within their professional communities. By equipping employees with knowledge, tools, and training, businesses can create a network of trusted individuals who can identify and report suspicious activities.

It is important to recognize that human trafficking can affect anyone, regardless of age, race, gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic class. Victims can be found in both legitimate and illegitimate industries. The Attorney General’s office highlights various vulnerability factors, including unstable housing situations, addiction, history of domestic violence, poor physical health, and unmet emotional or material needs.

If individuals suspect they have come into contact with a trafficker or trafficking victim, the Attorney General's office advises against confronting the suspect directly. Instead, they should immediately call 911 or local authorities to ensure the safety of the victim and themselves.

As Attorney General Miyares reaffirms Virginia's commitment to combating human trafficking, it is crucial for the community to be aware of the resources available and the signs indicating a potential trafficking situation. By working together and remaining vigilant, we can make significant strides in preventing human trafficking and supporting survivors.
