Ballard Spahr Litigation Associate Isabella Salomão Nascimento has been honored in the 2023 Minnesota Lawyer Attorneys of the Year program in the Group Category.

In her previous role as a staff attorney for the ACLU of Minnesota, Ms. Salomão Nascimento worked on Parada v. Anoka County, a case in which she and others on the team defended the constitutional rights of a woman who was unlawfully detained based on her immigration status after a traffic incident. In November 2022, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court’s finding that the woman had suffered unconstitutional discrimination in violation of the 14th Amendment, writing, “Anoka County’s policy is a classic example of national-origin discrimination.” As a result of Anoka County’s unconstitutional policy, the district court further found—and the Eighth Circuit affirmed—that Ms. Parada’s prolonged and illegal detention constituted false imprisonment. For more on the case, please see the ACLU of Minnesota’s website.

Ms. Salomão Nascimento joined Ballard Spahr in January 2022. She handles media and entertainment law matters. Her First Amendment-based practice includes defending against libel/defamation, invasion of privacy, and right of publicity claims across the country; prepublication vetting of both news and entertainment content; advising and defending clients on subpoenas and privilege issues; and providing guidance on state public records laws.
