The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is currently investigating an officer-involved critical incident that took place on the evening of December 27, 2023, in Marathon County, Wisconsin. The incident occurred in the Village of Weston, and the DCI is working diligently to determine the facts surrounding this case.
According to the Everest Metro Police Department, they received a 911 call at approximately 11:12 p.m. reporting a domestic incident. Responding officers arrived at a residence on the 3300 block of Mount View Avenue in Weston, where they encountered a male subject who was assaulting a female. The officers attempted to subdue the suspect using less lethal options, but were unsuccessful. As a result, two Everest Metro Police Officers discharged their firearms, striking the subject. Despite lifesaving measures, the individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
During the incident, a female subject sustained life-threatening injuries and was immediately transported to a local hospital for treatment. The officers involved in the incident did not sustain any injuries.
In compliance with agency policy, the officers have been placed on administrative duty while the investigation is ongoing. The Everest Police Department is equipped with body-worn cameras, which will aid in the investigation.
The DCI has taken the lead in investigating this officer-involved critical incident, with support from the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory, Wisconsin State Patrol, Kronenwetter Police Department, Marathon County Sheriff's Office, a DCI Crime Response Specialist, and members of DCI's Digital Evidence Unit. All law enforcement agencies involved are fully cooperating with the DCI during the course of this investigation.
The investigation is still underway, and the DCI is actively reviewing evidence to establish the facts surrounding this incident. Once the investigation concludes, the investigative reports will be handed over to the Marathon County District Attorney.
