The Florida Attorney General’s Office has released the 2022 Hate Crimes in Florida Report, providing detailed information on hate crimes reported throughout the state. The report, based on the data collected by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement under the Uniform Crime Reporting information system, reveals an alarming increase in hate crime reports from 2021 to 2022. Of particular concern is the more than 100% increase in anti-Jewish incidents.

Attorney General Ashley Moody expressed her outrage at the rise in hate crimes, stating, "Crimes driven by hatred for others are a scourge on our society and the recent uptick in these vile acts is infuriating." She highlighted the doubling of antisemitic crimes in Florida and acknowledged the global increase in assaults on Jewish people. Moody emphasized Florida's commitment to standing against antisemitism and hate, asserting, "Let me be clear, Florida stands against antisemitism and hate of any kind."

The report indicates that there were 229 hate crimes reported statewide from January 1, 2022, to December 31, 2022, compared to 148 incidents reported in 2021. Hate crimes are defined as senseless, criminal acts motivated by hatred and bias towards individuals or groups based on characteristics such as race, religion, or sexual orientation.

Florida has taken legislative measures to address the issue of hate crimes. The state passed laws in 1989, including Section 775.085 of the Florida Statutes, which imposes increased penalties for crimes with evidence of certain prejudices. Additionally, the Hate Crimes Reporting Act, Section 877.19 of the Florida Statutes, mandates that law enforcement agencies report hate crimes to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. It also requires the Florida Attorney General's Office to publish an annual summary of the data collected.

The release of the Hate Crimes in Florida Report serves as a reminder of the importance of tackling hate crimes and promoting inclusivity. It is crucial for society to have a zero tolerance policy towards crime against any individual or group.
