ORLANDO, Fla. (Legal Newsline) — The owner of an apartment complex is facing a wrongful death lawsuit over the August shooting of a Florida teenager.

Lashaunda Smith, as personal representative of the Estate of Amaurio Sledge, filed a complaint Oct. 20 in Orange County Circuit Court against Advenir At The Oaks LLC alleging negligence.

According to the plaintiff's complaint, her son Amauri was at The Advenir At The Oaks apartments in Ocoee on Aug. 6, 2023. She alleges her son, while on the premises, was shot and killed in the common area

The plaintiff claims the defendant was negligent for failing to provide adequate security such as surveillance cameras or working security gates. She further claims the defendants knew of numerous criminal acts that occurred on the premises and failed to warn residents and invitees.

The plaintiff alleges that the defendants also failed to patrol the premises to help deter crime and failed to prevent unauthorized persons from gaining entry to the premises. She also alleges in her lawsuit that the defendants failed to have a screening process for potential tenants.

The plaintiff seeks monetary relief of more than $50,000, interest, trial by jury and all other just relief. She is represented by Joshua Padron of The Haggard Law Firm in Coral Gables.
