TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Legal Newsline) — The owner of a Florida apartment complex is facing a claim that lack of security caused the fatal shooting of an invitee on the premises.
Sonya Lynch, as proposed representative of the Estate of Kaloni Grice, filed a complaint March 21 in Leon County Circuit Court against Inverness Apartments Tallahassee LLC alleging negligence.
According to the plaintiff's complaint, Grice was at the defendant's apartment building on March 12, 2022. She claims Grice was shot and killed due to inadequate security at the complex. She further claims the defendants allowed "pop up gatherings" or "chronic party houses" as they are called on social media, that would attract persons on the premises who commit violence.
The plaintiff alleges the defendant knew or should have known that its premises and adjacent areas were in a high-crime area with numerous shootings, batteries and assaults. She also alleges the defendant failed to warn of the danger and did not police, guard or deter crime to protect invitees. The plaintiff claims the defendant's negligence for failing to have proper lighting or surveillance cameras or reasonably screen guests who pose a foreseeable risk of harm to invitees.
The plaintiff seeks monetary relief of more than $50,000, interest and all other just relief. She is represented by Christopher Brooks of Fasig Brooks in Tallahassee.
