BakerHostetler is pleased to announce that it is the inaugural law firm sponsor of Georgetown Law’s RISE program. RISE helps incoming first-year law students from backgrounds historically underrepresented in law school and the legal profession successfully thrive in the challenging law school environment.
“BakerHostetler is proud to be the first law firm to sponsor Georgetown Law’s RISE program. Georgetown Law is a longtime partner of the firm and shares our commitment to increasing the students from diverse backgrounds both in law school and the legal profession as a whole. The Rise program creates a pipeline that is certainly aligned with that goal,” said Paul Schmidt, BakerHostetler chairman.
RISE selects incoming J.D. students from backgrounds historically underrepresented in law school and the legal profession, including underrepresented racial, ethnic, geographic, socioeconomic and first-generation-college backgrounds. Through an immersive pre-orientation program, participants get early access to the law school classroom environment and develop skills that will help them succeed in and outside of the classroom.
RISE participants also benefit from year-round programming, including small-group work and career development sessions, and are assigned both a RISE peer mentor and a RISE teaching fellow. The mentors and fellows introduce RISE participants to valuable law school resources and assist them with academic skills including studying and exam-taking.
“Law school is a challenging environment for any student. The RISE program seeks to ensure the RISE Fellows are able to hit the ground running and go on to reach their full potential -- during their time at Georgetown Law and as they enter the legal profession. We are thrilled to partner with a firm that shares our commitment to bringing diverse voices and talent to the legal profession. With BakerHostetler’s support, RISE will continue to be able to select and support over 100 Fellows each year,” said Maura DeMouy, RISE’s executive director.
The program, including scheduled meals and activities throughout the pre-orientation week as well as additional programming throughout the year, is free for all participants. Additionally, RISE provides each participant a small stipend to cover meals and other incidentals not covered during the pre-orientation week.
