IAM Patent 1000 Spotlights Fox Rothschild's Intellectual Property Group

For the seventh consecutive year, attorneys in Fox Rothschild’s Intellectual Property Department are highlighted in the IAM Patent 1000.

This annual guide, produced by Intellectual Asset Management, identifies top patent practitioners in key jurisdictions around the globe, determined through extensive research and interviews with attorneys and in-house counsel around the world.

Comprised of more than 100 professionals nationwide, Fox’s Intellectual Property Department includes 18 who hold doctoral degrees in the sciences and engineering, as well as former U.S. Patent and Trademark Office examiners, former university and industry researchers and former in-house attorneys and corporate engineers.

In New Jersey, where Fox’s Princeton office serves as a significant hub of the firm’s life sciences practice and represents such clients as Rutgers University, University of Rochester and Rockefeller University, the following attorneys are listed in the guide:

  • Peter J. Butch is praised for being "highly adept in patent preparation and prosecution, sought-after as an opinion giver and skilled in licensing negotiations."
  • Jianming Jimmy Hao, Ph.D. is noted as "an integral member of the China practice" who "maintains vibrant portfolio management and deal practices."
  • Wansheng Jerry Liu, Ph.D. is highlighted as an attorney who"excels as a corporate, litigation and IP lawyer."
  • Gerard P. Norton Ph.D., Managing Partner of Fox’s Princeton office and the first attorney to serve as Chair of Fox's IP Department, is named "a mature counsellor" who "litigates with poise."
One of only two firms in New York with five or more representatives listed in the Patent 1000, Fox's New York office is home to the following group of patent practitioners:

  • Dianna G. El Hioum, Chair of Fox’s Intellectual Property Department, is noted as being "brilliant at guiding company decision-makers on the best direction to take" and "a highly skilled teacher who doesn’t just lay out options but educates her clients about them...to gain a better understanding of the law and the nuances of drafting good patent specifications.”
  • Christopher W. Glynn, Ph.D. is mentioned for handling "a large volume of IP due diligence" matters.
  • Janet M. MacLeod, Ph.D. is attributed for her leadership as the firm's former New York Office Managing Partner as well as "highly collaborative" and a driving force behind the team's "consistently outstanding performance" in the region.
  • Pejman F. Sharifi is highlighted "as a savvy strategist with broad horizons" who "has significantly bolstered his new team’s high-technology and life sciences practices" since joining the firm in 2021.
  • Deborah A. Somerville is cited as an attorney who “masters the details of very complex matters and takes a pragmatic approach to moving them forward" and "an easy recommendation for anyone seeking top-notch patent counsel.”
In Pennsylvania, the guide highlights James M. Singer, Past Chair of Fox’s IP Department, as an attorney who "remains a pivotal figure in the outfit who stands out for his high-level strategic thinking."

Peter F. Corless, who joined the firm in May 2022, is also ranked in the guide for patent work in Massachusetts.

Fox’s IP Department handles the complete range of patent law matters, including domestic and foreign patent prosecution, corporate due diligence, post-grant proceedings, counseling and opinions regarding patent invalidity and noninfringement. In 2021 alone, the team of over 50 registered patent attorneys and agents secured more than 1,600 patents worldwide, including more than 900 in the United States.
