BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Legal Newsline) - Amazon lies when recruiting new Prime members, a new class action claims.
Filed April 26 in New York federal court, the lawsuit by lawyers at Reese LLP says Amazon promotes "free titles at Audible" when listing benefits of a $119-a-year Prime membership. Audible is Amazon's audio book library.
But Prime members are still charged a monthly fee, the suit says.
"Amazon surreptitiously enrolls its Prime members in a paid subscription to Audible through a process that deceives reasonable consumers, charging the consumers' credit or debit cards without their permission or authority," the suit says.
"As a result, many Prime members pay monthly subscription fees for Audible services that they never asked for and/or ever used."
Once consumers complain, Amazon makes it difficult to cancel the Audible memberships and doesn't provide full refunds, the suit says.
