North Carolina Lawyers Weekly Honors Matthew Nis Leerberg Among Leaders in the Law

Award

Fox Rothschild LLP congratulates Matthew Nis Leerberg, who was named a 2022 Leader in the Law by North Carolina Lawyers Weekly, an annual awards program that recognizes legal professionals licensed and practicing law in the state of North Carolina who have gone above and beyond in their profession.

Leerberg has played an essential role in Fox’s strategic expansion in the Southeast. He was among those who helped lead the 2018 merger of his previous firm, Smith Moore Leatherwood LLP, with Fox. Once part of Fox, he served as managing partner of the firm’s Raleigh office and a member of Fox’s Executive Committee. Leerberg currently co-chairs Fox’s Appellate Practice, a group with more than 70 attorneys, including several who are Board Certified Specialists in Appellate Practice by the North Carolina State Bar.

Leerberg’s clients include prominent private equity firms, large health systems, franchisors, small businesses and individuals, which he represents in a variety of federal or state appeals, class action defense, bet-the-company litigation, trade secret and noncompetition litigation and contract litigation. Throughout the pandemic, Leerberg has assisted with the North Carolina legal system’s shift to virtual practice, including being the first attorney to argue remotely before the North Carolina Supreme Court.

An established authority on North Carolina appellate law, Leerberg, together with his firm colleague Elizabeth Brooks Scherer, co-authored North Carolina Appellate Practice and Procedure, a 1500-page comprehensive discourse on the state’s system published by LexisNexis®. He also founded Fox’s North Carolina Appellate Practice Blog, which provides news, information and tips regarding how to best practice law in North Carolina’s State and Federal Appellate Courts.

Beyond Fox, Leerberg serves as Vice Chair of the North Carolina Bar Association's Appellate Rules Committee. He is also the Chair emeritus of the Appellate Practice Section of the North Carolina Bar Association. Leerberg is particularly proud of his work representing those of lesser means, including service on the Fourth Circuit’s Criminal Justice Act panel and inclusion in the North Carolina Pro Bono Honor Society for five consecutive years.

He earned his J.D., with high honors, from Duke University School of Law and B.A., magna cum laude, from Harvard University.
