NEW YORK (Legal Newsline) - Bath & Body Works is facing a lawsuit that claims a candle sold at one if its stores burned out of control until it burned a woman's arm.
Michelle Melendez filed her lawsuit in New York County Supreme Court against the retailer, arguing a eucalyptus- and spearmint-scented candle she bought in 2020 caused permanent scarring on her left hand and arm.
The candle had three weeks and, out of nowhere, the flame produced grew three feet high, the suit says. Melendez said she tried to move the candle from her bathroom to a nearby sink to put out the flame.
"Upon the attempted removal of the candle from the bathtub to the sink, the flame of the candle unexpectedly and explosively expanded, causing burns to Plaintiff's left hand and arm," the suit says.
Melendez says water made the flame grow higher, to the point Melendez retrieved a fire extinguisher. She says the fire caused second-degree burns as well as nightmares for her 10-year-old daughter who witnessed the incident.
Melendez is represented by Benjamin Curcio of Curcio Mirzaian Sirot.
