DoorDash scamming customers with service fee, lawsuit says

SAN FRANCISCO (Legal Newsline) - DoorDash has chosen to fight a proposed class action over the fees it charges in federal court.

On Jan. 13, the food-delivery service removed the case from San Francisco Superior Court to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The plaintiffs are suing over DoorDash's delivery fees, which they say exploit Americans' desire to stay home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

DoorDash shows a lower delivery fee to customers by hiding a portion of the fee in a different line item called "fees and estimated tax," the suit says.

"Obscured from users and hidden with the 'fees and estimated tax' amount is an additional 'service fee' that is nothing more than a delivery fee in disguise," the suit says.

"This 'service fee' - which is itself obscured from users and bundled with a sales tax - amounts to an additional 15% of the food order amount."

The law firm KalielGold filed the case.
