Reed Smith LLP issued the following announcement on Mar. 2.

Global law firm Reed Smith announced today that Christopher Pineda, a second year law student at the University of Southern California Gould School of Law, and Marquan Robertson, a second year law student at the University of Notre Dame Law School, are recipients of the firm’s 2021 Deborah J. Broyles Diverse Scholar Award. Pineda and Robertson will be joining the firm’s 2021 Summer Associate Program in Century City, CA and Philadelphia, respectively.

Each year, Reed Smith provides $20,000 to one or more outstanding law school students in the United States who demonstrate academic excellence and a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. The award supports the honoree’s law school-related expenses, and the firm also provides a paid summer associate position at Reed Smith between the student's second and third years of study.

“Christopher and Marquan have put in the work in the classroom and in their communities and demonstrated qualities and characteristics deserving of being named Deborah J. Broyles Diverse Scholars,” said Geoffrey Young, Reed Smith partner and executive director of diverse recruiting. “Both are young leaders on their respective campuses, are inspirations to their peers, and have the ambition and drive to succeed no matter where the future may take them. They both fully embody Deborah’s legacy, and we look forward to having them join us this summer.”

Since its inception in 2002, the Broyles Diverse Scholar Award and its predecessor program has awarded 31 scholarships and summer associate positions.
