Nelson Mullins issued the following announcement on June 18.

In response to the COVID-19 crisis, Nelson Mullins has collaborated with the Atlanta Legal Aid Society to launch the Wills for Nurses Project. Wills for Nurses will provide Atlanta hospital frontline nurses and nurse technicians with free, remote legal assistance offering simple wills and medical directives.

Atlanta Legal Aid has helped coordinate contact with hospitals in the area. "With Nelson Mullins as our partners, we are able to reach a population that we often can’t and provide services to people on the front lines of this pandemic," said Cari Hipp, director of pro bono at Atlanta Legal Aid.

"Many working in these highly dangerous situations realized they had not finalized their estate planning, and we heard they were anxious about this legal issue," said Norah Rogers, Nelson Mullins pro bono administrator. "This project is a legal response to say thank you to the nurses and nurse techs for helping so many of our fellow neighbors while risking their own safety — the definition of a hero." Rogers says she hopes that the program will be expanded to assist nurses in South Carolina and Florida, as well.

Through the program, nurses are assigned to one of 27 Nelson Mullins attorneys, who are all trained in will preparation. Atlanta partner Russell Love has helped review materials and provide support for the project, as his regular practice focus is estate planning. Since launching on June 1, 18 nurses have been assigned to receive help on wills.

To qualify for the program, applicants must have an estate valued under $2 million in assets, including cash, personal property, stocks and bonds, real estate, savings, inheritance, and retirement assets. Those interested can apply at this link.
