NEW YORK (Legal Newsline) - Former campaign workers for ex-Presidential candidate Mike Bloomberg are calling him out in the Southern District of New York for not making good on promises for his campaign staff.
On March 23, Alexis Sklair, Sterling Rettke and Nathaniel Brown sued on behalf of themselves and others in their situation, alleging Bloomberg vowed that his staffers would have jobs through the election in November. But Bloomberg is no longer in the race after ceding to fellow Democrat candidates Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders.
While the campaign is on pause due to the spread of the coronavirus, Bloomberg’s staffers are suing him for broken promises.
“Michael Bloomberg and his campaign promised salaries that nearly double that of other campaigns. And they pledged to keep this promise regardless of whether Bloomberg won the democratic nomination,” the plaintiffs wrote. “After Bloomberg lost the Democratic nomination, his campaign unceremoniously dumped thousands of staffers, leaving them with no employment, no income, and no health insurance.”
They also mentioned that the COVID-19 pandemic has led to the economic downfall, putting them in a dire financial state.
They’re suing for fraudulent inducement and promissory estoppel. They’ve requested a declaration that Bloomberg and his campaign committed the claims, and for an order for the defendants to pay compensatory and punitive damages, as well as attorneys’ fees and court costs.
