Bradley Arant Boult Cummings issued the following announcement on May 14.
Bradley is pleased to announce that it has awarded 2019 diversity scholarships to first-year law students Briaunna Buckner from the University of Mississippi School of Law and Adora Olisaemeka Onyiuke from Vanderbilt University Law School.
Each scholarship includes a summer clerkship. Ms. Buckner will work in the firm’s Birmingham office, and Ms. Onyiuke will clerk in Bradley’s Nashville office.
The firm’s diversity scholarships promote the education of outstanding law students who reflect the diversity of the legal marketplace and who are traditionally underrepresented in the legal profession.
“We are very excited to welcome Bri and Olisa to Bradley this summer,” said Bradley Chairman of the Board and Managing Partner Jonathan M. Skeeters. “Both are outstanding law students and deserving recipients our firm’s diversity scholarships, which represent our strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, including career development for eligible law students.”
At the University of Mississippi School of Law, Ms. Buckner received the 1L Student of the Year Award and the Fall 2018 Outstanding Student Award, achieving the highest grade in Civil Procedure I. She is a member of the school’s Moot Court Board and the Trial Advocacy Board. She also is a senator with the Student Bar Association and a Business Law Fellow. A native of Detroit, Michigan, Ms. Buckner also holds a Master of Public Administration (magna cum laude) and a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice, both from Jacksonville State University. Ms. Buckner has interned at Lightfoot, Franklin, & White LLC and served as a public affairs coordinator at the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center in Anniston, Ala. Her community involvement includes tutoring with Legacy Club Incorporated and volunteering with the Boys & Girls Club of America.
While attending Vanderbilt University Law School, Ms. Onyiuke has been a leader with the Black Law Students Association and has served as a mentor for EmbrACE, a student organization for college women to mentor middle school girls in Nashville on age- and gender-related issues. She also is involved with the Legal Aid Society and Law Students for Social Justice. A native of Farmington, Connecticut, Ms. Onyiuke received her Bachelor of Arts in sociology from Georgetown University. She has worked as a legal assistant at Steptoe & Johnson, LLP, in Washington, D.C., and as a summer intern for U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty of the District of Columbia. Ms. Onyiuke also has worked as a teaching assistant/tutor with the National Capital Area YWCA.
Bradley’s diversity scholarships are part of the firm’s ongoing commitment to promoting a diverse and inclusive workforce and culture at the firm, and in the legal profession. Bradley also hosts minority high school students as summer interns, and the firm’s attorneys and staff regularly organize, host and participate in programs, seminars and panels aimed at increasing the participation of women and minorities in the legal profession.
