DLA Piper issued the following announcement on Jan. 22.
DLA Piper and the DC Affordable Law Firm (DCALF) have jointly announced that Mary Gately, a partner in DLA Piper's Litigation practice, will be devoting part of her time to serving as the legal director for DCALF during 2019 on a pro bono basis.
DCALF is a charitable nonprofit that provides legal services to modest income DC residents who do not qualify for free legal aid but cannot afford the normal rates that lawyers charge. It was created by Georgetown Law Center, Arent Fox and DLA Piper in 2015 to help those who are seeking asylum on their own or are facing risks such as losing the custody of their children or being evicted.
Along with her busy practice, Gately has devoted considerable time to pro bono work, including assisting DCALF clients and working to advance civil rights. A cum laude Harvard Law School graduate, Gately has been named a DC Super Lawyer for the past four years and is Chambers rated.
"It is an enormous benefit to have someone with Mary's experience and expertise serve as our part-time legal director this year," said Sheldon Krantz, executive director of DCALF. "We are grateful to Mary and to DLA Piper for making her available."
"It is a tribute to Mary that she is willing to take on this important assignment," said Jeff Lehrer, managing partner of the firm's Washington, DC, and Northern Virginia offices. "It also reflects DLA Piper's ongoing commitment to providing expansive and far-reaching pro bono service."
