K&L Gates issued the following announcement on Jan. 15.

Research Triangle Park - Global law firm K&L Gates LLP has added Rebecca M. Schaefer as a health care partner in the Research Triangle Park office. She joins the firm after serving as associate university counsel and health care practice group leader at The University of North Carolina (UNC)-Chapel Hill.

As the senior health care attorney for the UNC School of Medicine, UNC Faculty Physicians, and other health affairs schools at UNC-Chapel Hill, Schaefer advised on a variety of regulatory, transactional, institutional policy, and governance matters, including numerous federal and state health care laws. Her transactional experience includes joint ventures and practice acquisitions, as well as professional service, academic affiliation, timeshare, and data use agreements, along with a variety of other contracts. Schaefer also has experience drafting and counseling on faculty physician employment documents and matters, including physician compensation plans, employment agreements, restrictive covenants, and tenure policies.

Prior to her time at UNC-Chapel Hill, Schaefer worked for another large law firm representing clients from various sectors of the health care industry – including hospitals, medical management companies, physician groups, pharmaceutical and medical device companies, patient advocacy groups, and trade associations – on matters such as clinical trial agreements, regulatory compliance counseling, health care transactional due diligence, and the research, analysis, and compilation of legal and policy positions presented on behalf of clients to several regulatory agencies.

“We are delighted that Rebecca has joined our practice, given her strong experience in health care regulatory matters and the representation of academic medical centers,” said Mary Beth F. Johnston, managing partner of K&L Gates’ Research Triangle Park office and a co-leader of the firm’s global health care practice.

Schaefer’s arrival follows the recent additions to the firm’s Research Triangle Park office of higher education and health care partner David M. Parker and FDA partner Erica M. Jackson.

K&L Gates’ health care lawyers counsel clients – including major academic medical centers, tertiary care hospitals and established community and regional health care providers, and national health care businesses – on a variety of state and federal regulatory and compliance issues affecting operations, expansions, and reorganizations.
