Barnes & Thornburg LLP issued the following announcement on Dec. 18.

Barnes & Thornburg has named D. Randall Brown chair of the firm’s national Litigation Department. Brown is managing partner of the law firm’s Fort Wayne office.

A trial attorney, Brown will have overall management responsibilities for the department, which includes more than 180 litigators in 14 offices across Barnes & Thornburg’s national footprint. Brown succeeds Chicago partner William M. McErlean, who has served as chair since 2011 and will serve as Litigation Department Chair Emeritus in addition to continuing as an active partner with the firm.

“Barnes & Thornburg’s Litigation Department has grown significantly over the last several years through expansion, and more importantly, due to our lawyers’ commitment to supporting our clients and successfully solving their litigation problems,” McErlean said. “Randy is the right person to lead our litigation practice into the future as our clients continue to seek sophisticated and reliable legal counsel to protect their interests.”

Barnes & Thornburg attorneys litigate cases nationwide for businesses of all sizes, including Fortune 500 clients, in the areas of commercial and business litigation, intellectual property, labor and employment, product liability, environmental, antitrust, mortgage fraud, and white collar crime, among others. Firm lawyers also routinely advise clients on litigation prevention, insurance and claims management.

Brown concentrates his practice on complex commercial litigation. For almost three decades, Brown has defended major class actions, tried dozens of cases throughout the country, and acted as lead counsel in multiple appeals in Indiana and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. His cases are varied, ranging from class actions to shareholder and contract disputes and patent, trademark, copyright, trade secrets, and unfair competition claims.

Brown is a member of the firm’s management committee and has been an administrator in the Litigation Department, most recently tasked with business development efforts. He is a graduate of Manchester University and earned his J.D. from Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis.
