NFI to pay $45,000 to resolve gender discrimination allegations

Law

DALLAS (Legal Newsline) – The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced that NFI RoadRail LLC and NFI Industries, logistics and transportation companies based out of New Jersey, have agreed to pay $45,000 and furnish other relief after allegations of gender-based discrimination.

NFI allegedly paid a female director less than three male directors at its Irvine location. This alleged action is illegal under the Equal Pay Act of 1963, which bans sex-based wage differentials for jobs that require equal skill, effort and responsibility. The allegations additionally violate Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which bars employers from discrimination, including compensation, on the basis of gender.

"Equal pay for equal work is a fundamental civil right," Patrick Connor, senior trial attorney at the EEOC's San Antonio Field Office, said. "From entry-level jobs to highly paid management positions, women should be paid equal to men, period."

NFI will pay $45,000 to the alleged victim and ensure that its employment practices conform to federal laws in the future.

"Addressing sex-based pay disparity in the workplace remains a priority for EEOC,” EEOC Supervisory Trial Attorney Eduardo Juarez said. “This lawsuit again demonstrated EEOC's ongoing commitment to eliminating sex bias in the workplace."
