LOS ANGELES (Legal Newsline) - Kraft Foods is being sued for allegedly misbranding one of its brands of sour cream as being healthier than it actually is.

Lawrence Appel filed the lawsuit in California Superior Court against the major food company claiming the Knudsen brand of sour cream was mislabeled in terms of calories, saturated fat, sodium and sugars.

The lawsuit, which was removed to federal court in August, claims Kraft labeled the products has having fewer of those nutritional qualities when it actually allegedly contained more.

The suit contends that a serving of Kraft’s sour cream actually contains “four times the specified quantity of calories, saturated fat, sodium and sugars.”

The product label says a one-half cup of the sour cream contains 60 calories, but the lawsuit maintains it is actually 240 calories.

The lawsuit is seeking class status for all those who live in California and purchased the Knudsen brand sour cream within the last four years. Appel is also seeking an unspecified amount in damages plus court cost.

Appel is represented by Daniel L. Germain of Rosman & Germain LLP in Encino, Cali., and David M. Cialkowski of Zimmerman Reed, PLLP in Minneapolis.

U.S. District Court for the Central District of California case number 2:15-cv-0681.
