WINSTON-SALEM -- The only contestable election scheduled next year for the North Carolina Supreme Court looks like it will, in fact, be a contest. Wake Forest University Law Professor Suzanne Reynolds stated Wednesday that she would run for the contestable bench spot currently held by Robert H. Edmunds. Edmunds was first voted in as an associate justice of the Supreme Court in 2000. Reynolds yesterday told the Winston-Salem Journal she wanted to bring her expertise in family law to the top bench after 26 years on the Wake Forest faculty. She also co-founded the college's Domestic Violence Advocacy Center, which places students with attorneys who work with victims of this crime. Prior to joining WFU, Reynolds handled civil cases at a private practice in Greensboro. She has had no experience as a judge but expects her professorial background as a reviewer, critic and communicator of lower-court rulings will compensate for it. Edmunds told the Journal he will run on his-first-term record as a Supreme Court justice. "I believe I've shown myself to be a qualified, reasonable and fair judge," he said. The general election for Edmunds' seat on the North Carolina Supreme Court will be held May 6, 2008.
