ALBANY, N.Y. (Legal Newsline) - Alfred O. Klaben Cars and Trailers reached a settlement with New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman on Wednesday over allegations that it sold trailers without proper braking systems.
New York law requires proper braking systems be installed on trailers that weigh more than 1,000 pounds, in addition to trailers that can carry more than 3,000 pounds. The trailer company, based in Weedsport, N.Y, allegedly sold trailers that didn’t have the correct braking systems.

As part of the settlement, the company agreed to mail notices to customers who had bought the trailers during the past three years to inform them of the brake issues. It also will pay to have the brakes replaced and will stop selling remaining trailers with improper brakes.
The trailer company also will pay $2,000 in legal penalties.
"(The) settlement will protect public safety and ensure a positive resolution for consumers,” Schneiderman said. “My office will always strive to ensure consumers are treated fairly in the marketplace, and that we are protecting people from needless hazards on our roads and highways.”
