LANSING, Mich. (Legal Newsline) - At its state convention in Lansing over the weekend, the Michigan Democratic Party nominated three women to run for the state Supreme Court.
On Sunday, Democrats selected Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Connie Marie Kelley, Oakland County District Judge Sheila Johnson and University of Michigan law professor Bridget Mary McCormack as its candidates.
"Connie Marie Kelley, Shelia Johnson and Bridget Mary McCormack have worked tirelessly in their legal careers to mentor and protect children," Democratic Party Chairman Mark Brewer said in a statement.
"On the Michigan Supreme Court, they will ensure individuals and families get a fair shot and that everyone plays by the same rules, including insurance companies and special interests."
Johnson will face off against the Republicans' candidate, incumbent Justice Brian Zahra, to fill a two-year term.
Kelley and McCormack will run against incumbent Justice Stephen Markman and Oakland County Circuit Judge Colleen O'Brien for eight-year terms.
"The current Supreme Court has misguided priorities," Brewer said. "The choice this November is clear."
He continued, "Voters will chose between two different sets of candidates -- these three candidates, who will work to protect children and families, versus the Republicans' candidates, who will continue to do the bidding of their campaign donors and side with corporate special interests."
Although political parties nominate individuals for the state's high court, their party labels do not appear on the ballot.
The state's general election is Nov. 6.
