PHILADELPHIA (Legal Newsline) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced a settlement Tuesday with Occidental Chemical that will continue contamination remediation at its 300-acre facility located three miles northwest of Delaware City, Del.
According to the announcement, Occidental, headquartered in Dallas, will implement the final cleanup remedy selected by EPA for contamination resulting from its former Delaware facility. The cleanup plan includes the excavation, onsite consolidation and capping of contaminated soils, along with administrative and legal safeguards to minimize exposure to contamination.
Occidental and EPA will work together to implement this cleanup work and return the property to beneficial use. The total estimated cost to implement the final remedy is $8 million in capital and $11million in operation and maintenance costs the EPA said.
The Occidental property consists of a former manufacturing area covering approximately 20 acres, several former waste lakes and landfills totaling approximately 13 acres, and marshlands totaling approximately 215 acres - south of the confluence of Red Lion Creek and the Delaware River.
The plant stopped chlorine production in November 2005 and stopped production of anhydrous potassium hydroxide in 2007. The plant is undergoing demolition and decommissioning in order to make the property suitable for industrial redevelopment.
