Hawaii AG takes action against Ore. company

Louie

HONOLULU (Legal Newsline) - Hawaii Attorney General David Louie has issued a cease and desist order against a Beaverton, Ore.-based company that allegedly pretended to be a charitable organization.

Freedom United Sales LLC allegedly sent sales representatives door-to-door in Windward Oahu soliciting care packages for active U.S. Military service men and women. The representatives displayed identification and provided receipts for donors but the organization is allegedly a for-profit entity, Louie says.

The Better Business Bureau of Oregon has issued a consumer alert regarding Freedom United Sales LLC, which is affiliated with a door-to-door sales company known as Smartraiser LLC. John Kroger, the attorney general of Oregon, issued a scam alert regarding representatives of Smartraiser LLC on March 1.

Freedom United Sales LLC is not currently registered with Louie's office as a charitable organization that solicits public contributions as is required by section 467B-2.1 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes. Hawaii law requires that any organization soliciting contributions for a patriotic, charitable, civil or benevolent purpose to register with Louie's office.
