COLUMBUS, Ohio (Legal Newsline) - Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray announced on Friday that he has filed a lawsuit against three individuals who allegedly violated the state's Consumer Sales Practices Act.
William S. Terry, Herbert L. Terry and Vicky Perdue allegedly engaged in a scheme that scammed people in the state out of more than $15,000.
The three individuals allegedly worked out of a used-equipment store called Mikayla's Place and misrepresented that they were a charity that provided electronics at discounted prices to help autistic and special needs children.
"These individuals created a sham business to prey on the kindness of strangers," Cordray said. "They represented that they were conducting a fundraiser and consumers could purchase laptops and other electronics at huge discounts to support a camp for children with autism or special needs. Instead, they pocketed the money and many consumers who purchased equipment never received it and never received refunds."
The matter was brought to the attention of Cordray after his office received 45 complaints from individuals who lost money in the fake fundraising scheme.
The suit alleges that the three made false and misleading representations and failed to deliver on their promises.
Cordray is seeking a permanent injunction against the individuals as well as full restitution and civil penalties.
