LANSING, Mich. (Legal Newsline) - A pair of Republicans won Tuesday night, overturning a Democratic majority on the Michigan Supreme Court.
Justice Bob Young, who has called the court "an ATM machine for trial lawyers," defeated Denise Langford Morris, while Mary Beth Kelly topped Gov. Jennifer Granholm's recent appointee, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Kelly will join Young, Maura Corrigan and Stephen Markman in the Republican majority. Marilyn Kelly, Michael Cavanagh and Diane Hathaway are Democrats on the court. Alton Davis will leave the court after being defeated by Kelly.
Davis, a Democrat, had been appointed after Republican Elizabeth Weaver retired this year.
Justice at Stake estimated the advertising war between third parties in the Michigan races to have cost between $5 million and $8 million.
