Bysiewicz
HARTFORD, Conn. (Legal Newsline) - The Connecticut Supreme Court has ruled Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz may not run for attorney general because she does not meet the qualifications.
The justices unanimously reached a decision Tuesday that Bysiewicz does not have 10 years of active practice of law, as is required. She was hoping to replace current attorney general Richard Blumenthal, who is running for U.S. Senate.
Earlier this month, Superior Court Judge Michael Sheldon ruled Bysiewicz eligible. The state Republican Party appealed Sheldon's ruling.
The Democratic nominating convention is later this week. The Supreme Court agreed to expedite proceedings to have a decision before then.
Bysiewicz is an attorney, but she has been secretary of state since 1998.
A Hartford Courant report said that during videotaped testimony in the case, Bysiewicz admitted she has never tried a case as a lawyer.
