AUSTIN, Texas (Legal Newsline)-Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott on Tuesday filed papers for reelection.
Abbott, a Republican, was first elected the state's chief legal officer in 2002. Although he had been considering a run for lieutenant governor, he instead filed papers to seek a third term as attorney general.
"At a time of national difficulty and unprecedented expansion of the federal government, Texas stands out as a state where free enterprise, traditional values, and individual freedom still thrive," Abbott said Tuesday. "As attorney general I have worked to serve and protect our fellow Texans by cracking down on waste and fraud in government, launching new initiatives to protect children, and going all the way to the United States Supreme Court to defend Texas values."
Abbott had $9.4 million in his campaign war chest this summer.
On the Democratic side, Barbara Ann Radnofsky, who ran for the U.S. Senate in 2006, filed Tuesday to run in the March Democratic primary.
"The voters will have a clear choice in November between a woman who wants to be the people's lawyer and a man who wants to move on to something else," Radnofsky said. "I'm prepared to safeguard all Texans from fraud and crimes whether committed with a computer or a tire iron."
