HARTFORD, Conn. (Legal Newsline) - Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal on Thursday called the decision by six baby bottle makers to stop using Bisphenol-A a significant public health step.
Avent, Disney First Years, Gerber, Dr. Brown, Playtex and Evenflow all voluntarily agreed to ban BPA, a chemical used in plastics that Blumenthal and other attorneys general warned had been linked to health problems in infants.
Blumenthal said he hopes that other industries will make similar decisions.
"This prompt positive response sends a profoundly significant message that baby bottle manufacturers respect the science showing BPA health dangers and will do the right thing," Blumenthal said.
"Hopefully other industries will heed our plea, and a broader legislative ban will be approved this session."
Blumenthal, Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden and New Jersey Attorney General Anne Milgram wrote the baby bottle makers in October.
"Voluntary BPA bans from baby bottles are good, but not good enough and must lead to complete prohibition," Blumenthal said.
"BPA in baby products can perilously leach into liquid, threatening pernicious and lasting health damage to infants."
