WILMINGTON, Del. (Legal Newsline) -- Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden has sent letters to 11 companies urging them to stop using a potentially harmful chemical in baby bottles and formula containers.
The letters were written in light of recent studies that show the toxic chemical bisphenol A (BPA) can damage infant reproductive, neurological and immune systems.
"Exposure to this dangerous chemical has been linked to a range of illnesses, including cancer and diabetes," State Solicitor Lawrence Lewis said. "For the sake of consumers' safety, and especially the
health and safety of our children, we are calling on manufacturers to immediately remove this chemical from the products they produce."
The Yale School of Medicine recently released a study that linked low levels of BPA to brain fluctuations and mood disorders in monkeys. Another federal health agency study confirmed the chemical may affect human development.
BPA is currently used in a wide variety of plastics, including water bottles and sunglasses. Some manufacturers have stopped using the chemical and indicate so on their packaging.
The letters were sent to the following baby bottle manufacturers: Avent, Disney First Years, Gerber, Dr. Brown, Playtex and Evenflo; and formula makers Abbott, Mead Johnson, PBM Products, Nature's One and Wyeth.
