INDIANAPOLIS - Another Republican has decided to attempt to replace outgoing Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter.
Two-term Valparaiso mayor Jon Costas said Tuesday that he will be looking to emerge from an ever-growing crowd of GOP contenders, according to a report in The Northwest Indiana and Illinois Times.
"I took six days to do a lot of soul searching to determine whether or not this is something I could do logistically. I want to make sure that it doesn't have a negative impact upon my family, certainly not upon the city either," Costas said, according to the report.
"I've come to the conclusion that I am seeking the nomination, and I am at this time attempting to gather the necessary support to obtain that nomination at the (state GOP) convention in June."
Others with similar aspirations include: Greg Zoeller, Carter's top aide; Kyle Hupfer, a former director of the state's Department of Natural Resources; and Tom Wheeler, chairman of the state Election Commission.
Greg Zoeller, Carter's chief deputy, also has expressed interest in the GOP nomination for attorney general, along with Kyle Hupfer, a former director of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and Tom Wheeler, the chairman of the Indiana Election Commission
The state GOP will make its decisions at its June 2 convention.
Costas graduated from St. Joseph's College, Ind., then earned his law degree from Valparaiso University. He works at Burke, Costanza and Cuppy and is a former city council member.
Prominent Indianapolis attorney Linda Pence, a former lawyer for the U.S. Department of Justice, appears to be the likely Democratic nominee.
