BALTIMORE (Legal Newsline) -- Two former Maryland attorneys general are throwing their support behind Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown in the race for governor.
Brown, current Attorney General Doug Gansler and state Delegate Heather Mizeur all are seeking the Democratic nomination for governor.
J. Joseph Curran Jr. and Steve Sachs endorsed Brown Thursday.
Curran is Maryland's longest serving attorney general. He was elected in 1986 and re-elected in 1990, 1994, 1998 and 2002.
"Anthony Brown has been an effective lt. governor and I know he'll make an exceptional governor for all Marylanders," Curran said in a statement.
"Anthony understands that we must continue building on the successes we've achieved together and his vision of economic prosperity and a stronger middle-class will drive our state ahead."
Sachs, Curran's predecessor, was elected the state's top lawyer in 1978 and re-elected in 1982.
Sachs called Brown "the best candidate for governor in 2014."
"Whether it was his work to reduce domestic violence as a delegate, his tour of duty with the Army in Iraq or his leadership in investing in our schools as lt. governor, Anthony Brown has dedicated his life to service and I know that we can trust him to get the job done for all Marylanders," the former attorney general said.
Both Curran and Sachs are Democrats.
"Joe Curran and Steve Sachs have earned their reputations as tireless advocates for Maryland families and we welcome them to the Brown-Ulman team," Brown said in response to the endorsements.
"By uniting a broad and diverse coalition of supporters, we'll win this campaign and get to work building a better Maryland for all of our families."
Brown selected his running mate, Howard County Executive Ken Ulman, in June.
Brown, Gansler and Mizeur are looking to take over for current Gov. Martin O'Malley, who is term-limited.
Maryland's primary is June 24, 2014.
