DENVER (Legal Newsline) -- Colorado Attorney General John Suthers on Monday announced a default judgment against Raymond Jones Jr. and multiple magazine telemarketing companies he operated after he allegedly scammed thousands of customers.
Raymond Jones, his mother Cora Jones and his affiliated companies, including Magazine Man, C&R Marketing and Associates LLC, Subscription Solutions and Publications@Mile High, allegedly bought lists of consumers already receiving magazines and used a carefully scripted process to deceive individuals into disclosing or confirming confidential financial information.
The Joneses allegedly charged consumers bogus fees and engaged in an aggressive collection effort on fraudulent contracts.
Suthers filed a complaint against the Joneses and their companies in May.
Under the terms of the default judgment, Raymond Jones must pay $3.7 million in penalties and restitution.
"After many hours working to expose and prosecute this case, we are pleased the court entered judgment in favor of the thousands of consumers who were victimized by this scam," Suthers said.
As part of the judgment, Raymond Jones must pay $1,682,772.41 in restitution to pay back 4,924 consumers, $2 million in penalties, $80,737 to Suthers' office and $955 in costs.
Raymond Jones also is permanently enjoined from participating in, assisting with, directing or engaging in magazine solicitations.
Suthers previously reached a settlement with Cora Jones, under which she agreed to a permanent court order that barred her from participating in magazine telemarketing.
