An unlicensed roofer could be banned from working in Illinois after Attorney General Lisa Madigan filed a lawsuit against him on Thursday alleging that he did poor work on customers' roofs and misled them with a false company name.

The suit claims Mark Beaupre, of Belleville, Illinois, operated CMM Construction, which isn't a licensed businesses, and accepted payments from customers totaling at least $12,000. Beaupre would solicit business from homeowners for roof and other home repair work, and then allegedly did poor work or didn't do any work at all. The suit also claims he would not provide refunds to customers.

“When a contractor takes a homeowner’s hard-earned money and does little or no work, that is a violation of the law,” Madigan said.

The suit was filed in St. Clair County Circuit Court. In addition to having Beaupre and his business banned in Illinois, Madigan is seeking restitution for the customers.

Christine McClimans, the assistant attorney general, will handle the case for Madigan's Consumer Fraud Bureau.

Under Madigan's direction, the bureau safeguards Illinois consumers from financial fraud.

Madigan has served as attorney general for the state since 2003 and is the first woman to hold the position.
