A Mexican national has been arrested for allegedly reentering the United States unlawfully after being deported. Bernardo Lorenzo-Guatemala, 38, was taken into custody on May 9, 2025, and faces one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien. Following his initial appearance in federal court in Boston, he was detained pending a hearing set for May 15, 2025.

According to charging documents, Lorenzo-Guatemala was previously deported from the U.S. on June 4, 2019. Authorities allege that he unlawfully returned to the country sometime thereafter. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) became aware of his presence following his arrest on July 2, 2024, for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.

Lorenzo-Guatemala has several prior felony convictions. These include a conviction in February 2016 for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of liquor; a July 2015 conviction for negligent operation of a motor vehicle; and another conviction in June 2014 for operating under the influence.

The charge of unlawful reentry carries potential penalties including up to ten years in prison, three years of supervised release, and fines up to $250,000. Upon completion of any sentence imposed, Lorenzo-Guatemala is subject to deportation. Sentences are determined by a federal district court judge based on U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and relevant statutes.

United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Field Office Director of ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston announced the arrest. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian J. Sullivan from the Narcotics & Money Laundering Unit is prosecuting the case.

It is important to note that details within charging documents are allegations at this stage; Lorenzo-Guatemala is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt in court.
