U.S. District Judge Theodore D. Chuang has sentenced James Kareen Day, a 43-year-old resident of Landover, Maryland, to 16 years in federal prison. The sentence will be followed by five years of supervised release. This follows his involvement in a series of armed and attempted armed robberies targeting businesses across Howard, Montgomery, and Prince George’s County in Maryland.

The sentencing was announced by Kelly O. Hayes, U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland, alongside Special Agent in Charge William J. DelBagno of the FBI's Baltimore Field Office; Chief Gregory Der of the Howard County Police Department; Chief Marc Yamada of the Montgomery County Police Department; and Chief Malik Aziz of the Prince George’s County Police Department.

Day's guilty plea revealed that between December 2022 and February 2023, he committed three armed robberies and four attempted armed robberies in various businesses across the counties mentioned. He managed to escape with money and other valuables from these establishments and their patrons. During some incidents, Day used a short-barrel shotgun to threaten victims while demanding cash and valuables.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and community groups. On May 26, 2021, a violent crime reduction strategy was launched to strengthen PSN with principles focused on building trust within communities, supporting violence prevention organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and evaluating outcomes.

U.S. Attorney Hayes expressed appreciation for the investigative efforts by the FBI, HCPD, MCPD, and PGPD. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Dawn Williams and Timothy Hagan are handling the prosecution.
