U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei announced that 300 cases involving 302 individuals have been filed between May 2 and May 8 as part of ongoing efforts to secure the southern border. Among these, 93 people face charges of illegally reentering the country, with many having prior felony convictions related to narcotics and immigration crimes. Additionally, 193 individuals are charged with illegal entry, while other cases involve human smuggling and various immigration-related offenses.
Two convicted felons, Milton Elias Lara-Lara and Alejandro Tamayo-Velazquez, were allegedly found illegally in the country near Roma. They have previous convictions related to fentanyl and marijuana and had been removed from the United States before their recent charges.
Other notable cases include Marco Antonio Rangel-Hernandez and Jose Guadalupe Valero-Lavanzate, both Mexican nationals accused of unlawfully returning to the U.S. after serving sentences for illegal reentry.
Elver Emmanual Ollervidez-Tapia admitted to failing to register and be fingerprinted upon his illegal entry into the country across the Rio Grande River. He has pleaded guilty to this crime along with illegally entering the country.
Isidor Lagunas-Estrada was sentenced to federal prison for 70 months due to multiple DUI offenses as an illegal alien. His criminal history includes a fifth DUI conviction after being found in the U.S. following a previous removal in 2020.
Angel David Salas-Herrera faces charges related to attempting to export stolen vehicles for a cartel. Authorities allege he was found in possession of a stolen Jeep Gladiator intended for exportation to Mexico for the Gulf Cartel.
In Brownsville, Alejandro Ramirez-Carranza admitted guilt on human smuggling and firearms charges alongside Issac Azuara-Vasquez. They conspired to transport illegal aliens from Mexico via boat on the Rio Grande River.
These cases are supported by federal law enforcement partners such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Border Patrol, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), among others at state and local levels.
The initiative is part of Operation Take Back America which aims at eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations while protecting communities from violent crime perpetrators through streamlined resources from Department's Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhoods.
