On May 8, 2025, Daniel Thorr Gatlin, a documented gang member of the Sureños or "Sur 13," was sentenced to 20 years in prison. The sentence also includes five years of supervised release. U.S. District Judge Donald M. Middlebrooks delivered the sentence in West Palm Beach.
Gatlin, who is from Jacksonville, Arkansas, was arrested on January 3, 2024, outside a convenience store in Stuart, Florida. Martin County Sheriff Deputies apprehended him as he attempted to sell one pound of methamphetamine to an individual he believed to be a legitimate buyer. During their investigation, law enforcement confirmed that Gatlin had offered various drugs for sale while residing at a sober home in Broward County and traveled to Martin County specifically for drug distribution.
Gatlin's affiliation with the Sureños gang played a significant role in his activities. In recorded conversations during the investigation, Gatlin referenced his connections within the gang and noted that these ties allowed him access to more than three pounds of methamphetamine intended for distribution in South Florida.
On February 19, 2025, Gatlin pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine. He is recognized as a career offender.
The announcement regarding Gatlin's sentencing was made by U.S. Attorney Hayden P. O’Byrne for the Southern District of Florida; acting Special Agent in Charge José R. Figueroa of HSI Miami Field Division; and Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek.
The case was investigated by HSI Fort Pierce and the Martin County Sheriff's Office and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Breezye Telfair.
