Attorney General Austin Knudsen has made a statement in recognition of Missing or Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP) Awareness Day. "I have had a front row seat to the devastation inflicted on Montana’s tribal communities by the missing and murdered Indigenous persons crisis, as attorney general and a former prosecutor in Roosevelt County," Knudsen stated. He emphasized the Montana Department of Justice's commitment to collaborating with federal, state, local, and tribal partners to address this issue. He encouraged public participation by visiting the state's missing persons database.

In the 2025 Legislative Session, two bills were passed that aim to strengthen the Montana Missing Persons Task Force. House Bill 545, sponsored by Tyson Running Wolf, proposes renaming the task force to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons Advisory Council. If signed into law by the Governor, it will include a homicide investigator and require recommendations for addressing MMIP issues be provided to federal agencies.

House Bill 83, also sponsored by Tyson Running Wolf, establishes a special revenue account for the MMIP Task Force. This account will allow for donations from legal sources to fund projects aimed at resolving the crisis.

The Montana Department of Justice has also launched an enhanced missing persons database under Attorney General Knudsen's leadership. This database provides public access to information about missing persons reported by local law enforcement agencies.
