A man from Forsyth County, North Carolina, has been sentenced to 37 years in prison following his guilty plea to multiple charges, including felon in possession of a firearm, assault on a federal officer by use of a deadly and dangerous weapon, and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence. This was announced by Acting United States Attorney Randall S. Galyon of the Middle District of North Carolina.

Tyree Ray Long, aged 28, received his sentence from Judge William L. Osteen Jr., United States District Judge in the United States District Court for the MDNC. Long was sentenced to 120 months for possessing a firearm as a felon with an additional three years of post-release supervision. For assaulting a federal officer, he received 204 months consecutive to the previous sentence plus another three years of post-release supervision. An additional 120 months were added for discharging a firearm during the assault on law enforcement, with five years of post-release supervision running concurrently with the other terms.

The incident began on April 21, 2022, when officers from the Winston-Salem Police Department responded to reports of shots fired during a domestic disturbance. A woman reported that Long had shot at her and her daughter as they attempted to leave their residence after an argument. Although their vehicle was hit four times, there were no injuries.

Following this event, arrest warrants were issued for Long. On April 26, 2022, members of the US Marshal’s Service Fugitive Task Force located him at a hotel in Winston-Salem. When approached by law enforcement vehicles blocking his exit, Long attempted to flee by ramming into police cars and led officers on a chase through Winston-Salem. During this pursuit, Long fired approximately ten shots at officers before crashing into traffic at University Parkway and 25th Street.

Long then fled on foot towards a CVS store where he was observed carrying a handgun and firing one round at an officer before being detained.

He pleaded guilty on August 5, 2025, to charges under several U.S.C sections relating to firearms possession by felons and assault on federal officers.

The investigation involved collaboration between several agencies including the Winston-Salem Police Department, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF), US Marshal Service Fugitive Task Force (USMS FTF), and Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office. The prosecution was handled by Special Assistant United States Attorney Lauren Martin and Assistant United States Attorney Nicole R. DuPré.
