Wade Schear, a 41-year-old resident of Gillette, Wyoming, has been found guilty of possession with intent to distribute over 500 grams of methamphetamine. The verdict was delivered by a federal jury on April 30, following a trial that lasted nearly three days. The proceedings took place in front of U.S. District Court Judge Kelly H. Rankin.
The investigation, led by the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation Central Enforcement Team, focused on the possession, transportation, and distribution of controlled substances in Natrona County. Schear emerged as a significant figure during the inquiry. On June 22, 2024, a routine traffic stop was conducted by the Platte County Sheriff's Office near Chugwater on a vehicle driven by Schear. During the stop, a K9 unit signaled the presence of controlled substances. A search of the vehicle revealed approximately two pounds of methamphetamine concealed in a backpack along with multiple cell phones, over $800 in cash, and Schear's personal items. Evidence presented in court suggested that Schear made several trips from Wyoming to Colorado to acquire substantial quantities of methamphetamine for distribution in Wyoming.
Sentencing is set for July 17. Schear potentially faces a minimum of 10 years to life in prison, followed by a supervised release period of at least five years to life. He may additionally incur a $10 million fine and a $100 special assessment.
The investigation was conducted by the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation Central Enforcement Team and the Platte County Sheriff’s Office. The prosecution was led by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Mackenzie R. Morrison and Eric Heimann.
