Shahiem Groover, a 45-year-old resident of Philadelphia, has been arrested and charged as announced by United States Attorney David Metcalf. The charges include possession with intent to distribute cocaine and methamphetamine, discharging a firearm during a drug trafficking crime, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Court documents suggest that on February 24, 2025, Groover was driving a Buick with a suspended license plate when he was stopped by Philadelphia police officers. Initially compliant, Groover later locked himself in the car and fled at high speed.
The chase continued for several blocks until Groover abandoned his car and fled on foot. As the officers pursued, Groover stumbled and allegedly fired a shot from a loaded Sterling Arms .22 caliber pistol at one of the officers. Officers managed to subdue and arrest Groover after a brief struggle. A search of his vehicle revealed cocaine and methamphetamine packaged for distribution.
Groover's criminal history includes a conviction in Pennsylvania, prohibiting him from possessing firearms. If convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and could be sentenced to life imprisonment.
The Philadelphia Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives conducted the investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Christopher Parisi is handling the prosecution.
These charges remain accusations, and Groover is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
